2/1/2024 0 Comments Dauntless airIt began with two essays – one in Air Attack, a New Zealand magazine that profiles innovations in aerial firefighting and a second in FIRELINE, a publication of the National Wildfire Suppression Association, which is run by Debbie Miley, who I have known for about 30 years. Production work on my book was already well underway when I began to see stories in other publications that told me my story was about to charge off in a new and unanticipated direction – like an unplanned ignition gone astray. Lots of very constructive suggestions for where “the story” goes from here. Me, too, given the enormous response to the interview. I interviewed Carroll after he wrote to say he enjoyed reading First, Put Out the Fire! but he wished I had brought the story forward another 20 years to include unplanned ignitions. We have been made aware of several such incidents in Idaho and Montana. Ignitions that got away from firefighters, incinerating private forest plantations. Carroll and his business partner, Van Elsbernd, advise law firms representing clients who are suing the Forest Service for damages done by unplanned ignitions. The Forest Service has added layers of confusion and suspicion in its failing attempt to achieve “managed fire” goals - by simply allowing “unplanned ignitions” to run their course.īlowtorch Forestry, last week’s post on our website, recounts Frank Carroll’s experience with Forest Service misuse of unplanned ignitions. Landscape and fire ecologists are constantly in the hunt for remote locations where they can safely pre plan and test their assumptions about the natural role that fire plays in ecosystem health and species succession.Įven under ideal conditions, “managed fire” is controversial because of the attendant risks to air and water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, and of course, the public’s forest playground. The cacophony of voices questioning Forest Service misuse of “unplanned ignitions” in service to “managed fire.” The meticulously planned use of fire to restore natural resiliency in fire adapted forests that have grown so dense that they invite insects, diseases and, eventually, fire itself. If this craft teaches nothing else, it teaches patience and humility. So, you’d think I’d have all the story-lines down pat…and you would be wrong. Forests and forestry have been my beat – the focus of my writing - for 35 years. I know this because it took me years to realize that the events that form stories often take weeks – and sometimes years - to develop. Sheley, this is how it’s supposed to be.” Patience and humility are uncommon virtues among journalists… L’Esperance and his staff developed it to document their company’s quite successful partnership with the Washington Department of Natural Resources. It’s cover story, “Save a Billion Dollars a Year: The New Fire Triangle,” written by Managing Editor, Chuck Sheley, builds on the Air Attack and FIRELINE essays.Īll three essays add significantly to the body of work contained in First, Put Out the Fire! So, too, does Dauntless Air’s vision paper and a PowerPoint presentation. Within days, we found a second article in FIRELINE, a publication of the National Wildfire Suppression Association, written by L’Esperance and titled “Five Ways to Avoid Wildfire Destruction in 2020.”ĭays later, our copy of SMOKEJUMPER, the National Smokejumper Association’s quarterly magazine arrived. Air Attack, a New Zealand magazine that showcases aerial firefighting technology, published an article by our colleague, Mike Archer titled “Rapid Initial Attack: The Wave of the Future?” L’Esperance appeared on our radar screen last January, about the same time First, Put Out the Fire! went to press. This week, we are featuring an interview with Brett L’Esperance, CEO and one of the owners of Dauntless Air, an aerial firefighting company that recently moved its maintenance facilities to Pappy Boyington Field, about 15 minutes from our home here in Dalton Gardens, Idaho.ĭauntless and Mr. Last week, our article Blowtorch Forestry profiled Frank Carroll’s blistering criticism of current Forest Service firefighting practices. He believes the agency is illegally allowing big wildfires to run in hopes of achieving the same environmental benefits that “managed fire” can deliver when planned well in advance. To that end, we are featuring articles that continue to develop the themes set forward in our book. Several readers have offered “what comes next” suggestions that add substance and clarity to our book. Editor’s Note: Sales of First, Put Out the Fire! have been brisk.

Some extra variety with those timescales would be nice, but we expect the majority of users will leave it set to continuous backup mode. They can also be configured to occur once a day, or just when you initiate them manually. While file sharing is possible, the feature can only be accessed by the web interface.īackups can be continuous and this is a default option. You can include external hard drives and portable SSDs and, on a business plan, servers in your backups, although networked drives can't be included. However, Backblaze is not designed for syncing files between computers, or getting at your music and video files in the cloud. It's there to help you recover data such as if your hard drive catastrophically fails or your laptop fails to boot. The tool is a "set-it-and-forget-it" solution. During our testing, we found it very simple and straightforward, and you can rest easy that your entire computer can be recovered if needed. You have the option to exclude other file types if you wish, but unless exclusively told to ignore them, it will include everything except the file types listed. Backblaze also won't backup files created by other backup utilities like Time Machine. On the plus side, there's little chance of anything valuable being missed during backup.īy default, Backblaze copies all data except ISOs, DMGs (Mac disk image), virtual drives, system files or executables. You also can't fine-tune which folders within these directories are backed up. For instance, your Documents folder may contain irreplaceable data but your Pictures might not. This can be an inconvenience if you only want to back up certain files. Backblaze: Featuresīackblaze doesn’t bother you with the details of your backup plan, just that it is occurring: when you initially install the desktop client, it doesn’t require you to select files and folders, but rather just grabs all the files and folders it considers important and starts transferring them to your Backblaze cloud backup. Backblaze Mobile 6.0, released in December 2022, has a new feel to it with authentication improvements for both platforms plus many tweaks and updates. The almost $200 spent on backing up your files should be seen more as a holding fee for the value of the large hard drive (up to 8TB), as when the restore is complete you can return it by mail and receive a full refund.īackups are limited to PCs and Macs, however alongside the web interface there are iOS and Android apps that allow you to access your data from anywhere. While it may not do much beyond suck up all the files on a computer and let you restore them, Backblaze does these core jobs very well. In the event of a system failure or loss, files can be downloaded for free, or Backblaze will put them on a USB hard drive for $189 and ship your data to your door. However, it is ultimately a different proposition so this comparison is, perhaps, slightly unfair. Unfortunately, in terms of web functionality, Backblaze falls short of Dropbox, Google Drive, or Apple iCloud when it comes to sharing files. There's also a mechanism for sharing stored files to others that is exclusive to the web interface. Like the desktop client, the web interface is also cut down and minimal, letting you review backed up files and restore them if needed. The Backblaze control panel can also be launched via a handy system tray icon in Windows. In this case, Backblaze sits neatly in System Preferences within macOS for instance. We like its integration within the operating system that helps to simplify the backup process - or at least, for those rare events that users need to modify controls. You can also choose to pause or throttle the upload process if you think Backblaze is taking up too much bandwidth to override the automatic throttling. Transferring data from an entire computer to the web is potentially a lengthy process, but the speeds Backblaze managed were impressive. Considering you get an unlimited amount of space in the cloud, it's easier to just let Backblaze backup everything, just in case. There is an option to exclude certain files and folders from a Backblaze backup, but we found it could be more straightforward. The options of the Backblaze package are limited, so the software doesn't have to do much except focus on the job at hand - to make sure that your files are getting continuously backed up in the background. The Backblaze desktop client targets simplicity over power. It's refreshing to see this sort of flexible pricing, but it does make it more difficult to compare Backblaze against competing services. This is especially useful if you’re replacing tape backups. However, you can contact Backblaze directly for different quotes for backing up multiple computers and servers, and putting more of your data in the cloud for long-term storage. Or maybe that’s just us, given we’ve both been in therapy for a considerable portion of our adult lives, and need to find our catharsis somewhere. Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote ( The Open House) wrote and directed Becky 2.Īngel and Coote said in a statement, “There’s nothing like a good revenge film. Lulu Wilson stars alongside Seann William Scott, Matt Angel, Courtney Gains, Aaron Dalla Villa, Michael Sirow, Denise Burse-Fernandez, Jill Larson, and Kate Siegel. But when a group known as the “Noble Men” break into their home, attack them, and take her beloved dog, Diego, Becky must return to her old ways to protect herself and her loved ones.” In the film, “Two years after she escaped a violent attack on her family, Becky attempts to rebuild her life in the care of an older woman – a kindred spirit named Elena. Now, you can judge for yourself as FeardotCom is streaming exclusively on SCREAMBOX today, alongside Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, the 1990 sequel starring Viggo Mortensen ( The Lord of the Rings) and Ken Foree ( Dawn of the Dead)! The film has been making a bit of a resurgence and maybe even having a renaissance with horror fans newly appreciating the much-maligned techy horror film that followed Dorff as a New York City detective who investigates mysterious deaths occurring 48 hours after users log onto feardotcom. The film’s most amusing flourish is definitely the casting of Robert Englund as a concerned parent of a teenager, a clever bit of meta-irony if there ever was one.William Malone, a Master of Horror behind such films as Creature, House on Haunted Hill, and Parasomnia, once took a stab at mixing early internet tech with horror in FeardotCom, which starred Stephen Dorff and was released in theaters by Warner Bros. Strangeland is no classic, but it’s smarter than it has any right to be director John Pieplow also knows how to work the industrial-gothic atmosphere, and Snider delivers a not-bad performance as the killer (though you kind of keep expecting - and hoping - that he’ll suddenly burst into singing “Burn in Hell,” the Twisted Sister song performed briefly in Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure). However, years later, the bad Captain is released from a mental institution‚Ķ and proves to be rather dangerous when he doesn’t take his pills. The father of his latest victim (Linda Cardellini, pre- Scooby-Doo) happens to be a cop (Kevin Gage), who manages to bust the freak and put him behind bars. The scope of this brutal fable (which is oh so much tamer than the “torture porn” films that would be all the rage in the next decade) is rather epic, covering several years in the legacy of Captain Howdy (Snider himself), a body modification fetishist who lures young victims to his dungeon (via the aforementioned Internet chat rooms) and proceeds to do very bad things to them. Dee Snider’s Strangeland īefore Rob Zombie started making movies, Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider penned this ahead-of-its-time tale of the dangers of Internet chat rooms. I won't be able to keep my game, unfortunately, because the cartridge will have to be sent back to Natsume ultimatel, but it helps me enormously because I will have my guides written by the time the game is released on 25 March. I am playing the English version of 'Cute'. No, unfortunately, I don't read Japanese. If I think of more differences between the two, I'll post them. This was possible in the original HM DS for boys as well. This allows your sheep to gain hearts very quickly. You can shear one sheep 6 times in Cute using the Touchglove and afterwards, each time you shear your sheep without the Touchglove, you can shear it six times using only the shears. I am going to add ALL events from both games to my Characters Guide and note in each case whether the event is in both girl and boy games or only in one or the other.ġ0. but it means that it is worth playing BOTH games. A few events that were in the original English HM DS for boys have been left out of Cute, unfortunately. There are MANY events in Cute that were in the original Japanese HM DS (boy) but which were eliminated from the English version of the game. A tie now is a 'push', neither win nor lose.ĩ. I don't recall if I confirmed that personally in one of my games or not, but I have proven the contrary in Cute. In the original HM DS, some players claimed that it was sufficient to have one tool at mystrile level. You cannot take the Legendary Sword in Cute UNTIL all tools are mystrile. (Again, in later versions of the original HM DS, I believe this was true as well, but in the early versions, the milker could increase rapidly and the level of the shears NEVER increased!)ħ. You can level up your milker and your shears but VERY slowly. The bachelors wear different colours of clothing each day.Ħ. You will have a 'Clothing Box' at the start of the game and changing your clothes daily will increase ALL bachelors' AP by 200 points and FP by 1 point.ĥ. You cannot perform the ranch bonus trick in Cute (again, later versions of the original HM DS eliminated THAT glitch as well, and it did not exist in the U.K. Your horse, dog and cat will increase in heart level unlike the original version of HM DS (apparently, later versions DID allow the cat and horse to increase in heart level but in the oldest versions, it was impossible)ģ. Obviously, you court the bachelors in Cute but you still can 'court' the 4 magical girls (Harvest Goddess, Witch Princess, Keira and Leia) as 'Best Friends' with the Blue Feather AND there is one new character, SkyeĢ. So far, in the English versions of Harvest Moon DS for boys (the original) and the new Harvest Moon Cute DS for girls, I have noticed the following similarities and differences:ġ. Clearly, the BBFC deem it not all that bad in terms of gratuity and I just wonder if that was the certificate the makers were aiming for I doubt it. Any film entitled 'Barely Legal' which revolves around people making pornography and still manages to worm its way into a realm of the '15' certificate over here in Britain instead of the '18' certificate has to have done something cataclysmically wrong during the making process. The film is fundamentally flawed in every retrospect. Yeah, trouble is Tony Montana had nothing to do with making pornography and Barely Legal has nothing to do with chasing the American dream: it's just clueless, horny kids using porn as a front to get closer to girls. This particular little travesty however follows three young American boys at high school as they attempt to feed off Tony Montana's ideation of 'getting the money, getting the power and getting the women'. That should be, if Jim Carrey sequels/prequels not starring Jim Carrey are anything to go by in the form of Son of the Mask and Dumb and Dumberer, utterly unwatchable at the very best. Evans (answers on a postcard as to what the 'M' might stand for) whose previous crimes against cinema include the 3rd and 4th Beethoven outings some years ago and who is also scheduled to direct the up and coming 'Ace Ventura Junior' film. The film, a part of the National Lampoon series (whatever that is), was directed by David M. What really grates, and this is an underlying theme, is that watching a really bad film is one thing but watching a really bad film about people attempting to make a really bad film within the universe of what we're seeing is just painful. Is there an audience for this sort of material? Are there people that will enjoy a film like Barely Legal? The film isn't really about anything as much as it is a documentation of producing pornography or the meek attempt at making pornography and all the hassle that it involves. Truth is, the film is barely watchable and feels more like a drunken after dinner daydream than an after school special. When I happened to stumble across this film, it was entitled Barely Legal and not After School Special. 1/31/2024 0 Comments Trials fusion xbox one guideSony Computer Entertainment / From Software / Japan Studio

Thus, they can save a day’s commuting time. Unlike the traditional 9-5 schedule, employees need to travel only for four days a week and not five days. Advantages and Disadvantages of 4/10 Work Schedule Advantages of 4/10 Work Schedule Benefits For Employees Less Commuting Time However, the resources onboarded during peak season can be issued additional time offs or vacation plan during the normal months. Generally, peak seasons are the busiest period for business owners in which they experience a sudden surge in customers. This way, staff can be available at all times when required. Seasonal 4/10 Shiftsīusinesses like retail that require more resources during the peak season can onboard more people during that period to handle the extra workload. This way, an organization can cover all standard work days. So, such businesses looking forward to embracing a 4/10 schedule can divide their resources into two groups to ensure coverage throughout the week.įor instance, one group can work from Monday to Thursday, while the other group can cover the first group’s day off by working Tuesday to Friday. Some businesses require consistent customer-facing operations from Monday to Friday. However, the total work hours in a day should be 10. The start and end timings of the workday for instance, they can opt for starting at 10 AM and ending the work at 8 PM, and so on. When they’d like to avail the day off in a week – whether Friday, Monday, or any other weekday. The flexible 4/10 schedule enables employees to decide – Variations of 4/10 Work Schedule Flexible 4/10 Shift Generally, employers prefer to keep Friday as a non-working day however, they can choose to keep any other day off as well. Irrespective of what work timings employers choose to keep, the total number of work hours must be 40. After four days of work, they get three consecutive days off on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Therefore, in this example, during the first four days of the week, namely Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, employees start work at 8 AM and end at 6 PM. In a 4/10 schedule, employees work 10 hours each for four days. This is a sample of the 4/10 work schedule: However, this model rewards employees with three days off that they can utilize to relax & recharge, plan a trip, or complete other pending work. However, they can also provide time off in the middle of the week.Īs explained, the workday in this schedule is longer (10 hours) than a workday of the regular schedule. Usually, employers choose to keep Friday or Monday off. In other words, a 4/10 schedule allows employees to work only four days a week, unlike the conventional schedule, where employees work for five days. The 4/10 schedule is a compressed work schedule in which employees work for 10 hours each for four days over a seven-day cycle, thereby getting a total of 3 days off each week.Īlso called the four-day workweek, this schedule squeezes 40 hours of workweek into four days rather than five. In this blog, you’ll learn the fundamentals, benefits, and drawbacks of the 4/10 work schedule so that you can take a call on implementing this system properly if it works for your business. This provides more days off over other conventional schedules. This schedule squeezes the 40-hour workweek into four days rather than five days. However, with the increasing demand for more flexibility among employees, this model is getting more attention than ever before.Īmong various compressed workweek models emerging slowly, the 4/10 work schedule has gained a lot of popularity. The compressed workweek is not a new concept. In order to attract a large candidate pool and retain top talent, employers are increasingly experimenting with compressed workweek schedules that offer more flexibility and days off than regular schedules.

SCIDvsPC, at least, edits and saves to PGN just fine. SCIDB is based on it so it would also be painful in it to edit pgns. Okay, what I've written is confusing, even for me, so let me summarise this paragraph: SCID is full of features but due to not editing pgn files, and multiple files for a single pgn in its raw format, all needed, it is not a handy tool for editing. I don't think that I will use chessbase formats, and SCID is easy to use but one will have many files if he wants PGNs. I actually meant formats which programs don't support PGNs properly. PGN is a universal format and there is not much need to open other formats. SCIDB(in development, as you said) is not much needed. But still it is good with most features one can expect. SCID considers PGNs as read-only files, so though it does #8, it can't save them directly as PGN, and with multiple files in its raw format, I would not like it. If you want something that supports pgn, scid, and chessbase formats all in one program, check out scidb (still in development). Tarrasch is easy to use but it lacks 4-7,10, with ability to setup positions also.Īlso, SCID and SCID vs. It is notable that Arena has all features except 3,6(half, but it is not easy to understand),7 and SCID lacks 4,6,7,8. *.si4(SCID Database),*.zsf(Zillions saved file) etc.) and can be used for engine tournament sort of thing It would also be good if it can open various formats(eg.
