Note: image edited to eliminate problematic stamp on tank. for identifying the fact that it is liquid oxygen as opposed to liquid nitrogen. Liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen storage Liquid oxygen (LOX), used as an oxidizer by the orbiter main engines, is stored in a 3.4 million liter tank on the pad’s northwest corner, while the liquid hydrogen (LH2), used as a fuel, is kept in a 3.2 million liter tank on the northeast corner. (I wouldn't use the set up in this photo too tippy!) A complex pressure reducing valve is needed to give a controlled low pressure flow, If you examine such a tank (in a lab, for example), you may find a series of date stamps, possibly covering decades, on which the tank has been tested at some huge overpressure. The tank is heavy, expensive, and must be treated with great care. Once liquid oxygen is exposed to warmer temperatures, it converts back into a gas. Liquid oxygen is created when oxygen gas cools to 297 degrees Fahrenheit (1). ![]() This is a very strong steel tank containing compressed oxygen gas at ambient temperature and very high pressure. Liquid oxygen is also 99.5 pure oxygen, but it is stored in a liquid form. The other type of oxygen tank is the much smaller (maybe 6 feet by 12 inch diameter) steel tank. Failure of this pressure relief valve (closed) is a major danger for this type of tank. I Love O (Rocket fuel oxygen) is a nutritional liquid that contains a very high concentration of oxygen at least 150,000 parts per million (ppm) at. To take up less space, oxygen is often stored as a liquid around minus 300 degrees Fahrenheit, about as cold as the surface of Neptune. In extreme cases, a heater may be used to raise the internal pressure to meet the needs of the facility. The tank isn't very structurally strong, so the generated pressure is relieved by usage in the facility, or by a pressure relief valve, which of course wastes oxygen. The low amount of inward heat flow causes some liquid oxygen to vaporize, raising the internal pressure. These tanks hold liquid oxygen at low pressure (a few atmospheres at most) and very low temperature with very effective(but cheap) insulation. They are distinguished by the name of the chemical firm, Union Carbide or Linde among others, painted on the side, and by the thick layer of frost found on the attached plumbing. Liquid oxygen therapy is the medical process of providing additional oxygen to a patient who cannot get enough oxygen on their own. Oxygen concentrators: This electric or battery-powered device pulls air from the room. The smaller container makes it portable for use outside the home. When you release the oxygen, the liquid converts to a gas that you breathe in. You often see large ( around two stories high) tanks outside a hospital. Liquid oxygen: A thermos-like container stores pure oxygen as a very cold liquid. The answer depends on the nature of the "huge oxygen bottles".
